It's Election Day!

In the UK, every 5 years we have our General Election where we decide which party will run our country for the following 5 years. For 2015, that day is today! People up and down the country over the age of 18 who remembered to register to vote (and I really hope you did!) are visiting polling stations in their local area and marking a cross next to the candidate they would like to represent their constituency in the Houses of Parliament, or their MP.

Every form of social media I've been on today (so basically all of them) are getting involved in Election Day with Snapchat giving us extra fancy filters like this one
Snapchat getting in on the Election Day act
And Facebook is asking you to let people know whether you're voting so statuses like these are currently filling my timeline and rightly so!
Facebook are encouraging people to share that they're a voter

I voted today along with lots of others and I've heard of people voting for all of the parties which is great. We will now have to wait until later tonight to find out who our next Prime Minister is going to be with the full coverage starting from 10:10. I will definitely be going down to our college bar to watch some of it at least.

This election is set to be the most interesting one yet with no clear winner through the First Past the Post system (which sucks by the way but that's for another day) and another coalition will definitely be making up the next government but the big question is between who?

In other related news, Nigel Farage, the UKIP Party leader, was in Durham today and spotted in one of the local pubs, The Fighting Cocks. I'm glad he's taking Election Day so seriously rather than drinking pints in a pub 277 miles away from where he's supposed to be in Westminster...

So if you're in the UK, you're over 18 and you're registered to vote: get down to your local polling station and have your say whether it's for a party or if it's to spoil your ballot because at least if you spoil your ballot you've had your say. Not voting does not say anything, it does not count as a protest vote.

I've voted, have you?

Follow Your Obsessions...

I watched a YouTube video today by Alex Day called Follow Your Obsessions where he basically said you should find something you are hugely obsessed with, do that and then try and find a way to make money out of doing that. So doing what you love rather than what gets you the most money in the most mind-numbing way possible. My problem is this, it only really seems to work for a miniscule amount of people.

I would love to spend my time riding around the world, filming my journeys and making a sort of video diary along with it and presenting these things to the world. Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor got sponsored by BMW to go on a trip and film what they were doing as did other people such as Lois Pryce and Austin Vince but I can't see myself ever getting that sort of opportunity. That is why I'm sat doing a degree in Chemistry at university. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy my course and university life but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy doing something else even more.

I've been riding for 3 years now and I still love it, I still enjoy going out and just riding around the countryside. I'm going to Ireland on my bike this year and doing a bit of a road trip around both Northern and the Republic of Ireland so maybe I'll try out my GoPro camera and vlogging skills there. If I can get the permission of the people I'm going with to film them of course (there's about 17 of us!).

Maybe someone will see it and then start sponsoring me to travel the world. Now that would be fab.

But until then, I'm going to have to stick to revising for my Chemistry exams next month.

Speak soon

A Letter to my 9 Year Old Self

Hey Charly,

So you’re about 2 months into being 9 now! I know it’s been a tough, long old stretch for you, despite the fact it’s been Christmas. I’m 2 months into 19 now so it’s a big reflection time for us now too. 10 years since Grandma died, it does get easier I promise. You’ve been so brave and you know that little bit of regret you feel, you make up for it. Well, I feel we have. We’re a lot stronger than people think kid, don’t you forget that.

Few spoilers now, we’ve stayed best friends with Ellen and Caitlin - that’s right, it’s been 12 years now and we’re all still going strong. Go us! You also get to have some absolutely incredible experiences that you’ll never ever forget for as long as you live but I’m not going to spoil the excitement for you by telling you what they are ‘cause I know you’ll hate me for it in the long run. We do know how to hold a bit of a grudge, don’t we?
Music is still a massive part of your life, but with our dad, was that ever in doubt? MotoGP? Yup that’s still around too. Along with netball of course, we love it and do you know what? I think we always will.

In 5 years time, you’ll surprise yourself with some choices that you make but follow your gut because it’s never led us astray. Keep your opinions strong too, you may annoy some people along the way but if they’re truly our friends, they’ll understand. That’s not to say you go mouthing off at every chance because then we’ll really make some enemies. We’ve got some good common sense between us so use it and always think first.

You’ll be pleased to hear, you’re not quite as hot headed as you are now in the future. We’ve got that under control. Or perhaps we just got over it and matured; either way, it’s a good thing. You are still as stubborn as an old horse though but that’s just us. We get it off Mum and Dad.

We’re pretty sure we know what we’re doing most of the time but don’t forget you’ve got a great set of friends and family around you if you ever are unsure. Maybe we don’t use that enough. Don’t keep it all bottled up all the time either, it’s not particularly healthy for us. I had to learn that the hard way so I thought I owed it to you to give you that little nugget of advice

All in all, we’re doing well, we’re happy. Even with ourselves! Well not entirely but you’re too young to be bogged down with that rubbish. Keep smiling, keep laughing, and keep going even when it gets tough. You’ve done alright on your own so far so just keep going! Set your sights high and work hard to get there. I promise you can do it. You can do anything you set your mind to. Keep a clear head too, make your voice heard when it needs to be heard, try your best to help people and don’t be afraid (not that you’re scared of anything anyway) of rejection.

We’ll keep our skin tough and our minds tougher and we’ll get through anything that life throws at us. Got it? Good. Have an amazing time!

Love,
Your Future Self

Liebster Award Nomination

Hey everyone!

So I haven't been blogging for a while as you can probably all see but I've had two emails recently from people following Life As I Know It on bloglovin' (the link is over there, click it you know you want to! -->) and also a couple of comments one of which was from 2 Peas In A Pod Blog (Jade and Stephanie) saying they'd nominated me for the Liebster Award!! The Liebster Award is an award which lets people know about the smaller blogs that are out there with 200 followers/subscribers or less. So I'd like to say an absolutely massive THANK YOU to them for that.

The rules are simple:
1. Thank the person who nominated you
2. Answer the questions given by the nominator
3. Nominate another 11 bloggers (with 200 or less followers) and link them
4. Create 11 new questions for the nominees to answer
5. Notify all nominees by social media/blogs

Questions from 2 Peas In A Pod Blog:

Q: What inspired you to start a blog?
A: I honestly have absolutely no idea! I think I was originally procrastinating from doing GCSE work and it was cold outside because it had been snowing. I always thought it'd be an interesting thing to do but never thought anything would come of it - I'm just not interesting enough I think!

Q: How did you feel about being nominated by us?
A: Absolutely gobsmacked. I didn't think people really saw my blog and I haven't been on for a while either. Although it turns out people have been looking at my blog because my page views count is now over 900!!

Q: What's your favourite animal?
A: It's got to be a giraffe. It was acceptable to have them as pets, I definitely would have one. Also the way they run is so fabulous

Q: What's your natural hair colour?
A: Dark brown, same as my picture - I've never actually died my hair!

Q: Skinny jeans or skirts?
A: Ooh that's tricky - I wear skirts and jumpers a lot but there's just something about wearing a pair of skinnies that just make you feel good

Q: Dream job?
A: I'd love to work for a motorsport, I think it would be so interesting and you'd get to travel around the world with the team. I also love motorbikes so that job sounds pretty perfect to me! (She says doing Chemistry at university)

Q: Favourite celebrity?
A: I have no idea! There's loads of people I like but I don't know if I would count them as celebrities or not. Hmm.. I'll have to get back to you on that one!

Q: How do you spend your Sunday evenings?
A: When I'm at uni, chilling in college with all my friends, possibly at the bar for a social drink or occasionally catching up on telly. At home, I slob on the sofa with my parents after Sunday dinner and we watch TV or a film. I love both options

Q: Eye colour?
A: Blue. With a bit of grey and a tiny bit of green

Q: Where have you travelled in the World?
A: Quite a lot of places in Europe but definitely not enough of the world. I would love to go to America, travel around Asia, visit Australia and New Zealand. And I would go back to Africa in a heartbeat

Q: Will you be following us as a thank-you?
A: Hell yeah! I need some more blogs on my feed to keep me inspired to keep on blogging. Plus your blog looks fab :)

My 11 nominees for the Liebster Award are... (drum roll please!)
Catherine's Corner
All Things Rosy
Don't Burst My Bubble
Professional Daydreamer
Books n Biscuits
That Geek With Glasses
The Faraway Bee
Casual Book Review
Nothing to say
What's Up Buttercup?
Isabel's Insight

Ooh time to think of my 11 questions now... here goes!
1. One place you would absolutely love to visit?
2. Current favourite song?
3. Favourite word?
4. How long have you been blogging?
5. Top way to procrastinate? (Other than blogging!)
6. Sweet or savoury?
7.If you could go on a date with any celebrity, who would it be and why?
8. Favourite season?
9. Apple or Windows?
10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
11. Favourite memory?

Thanks again to Jade and Stephanie!

I will now (try to) be a more pro-active blogger, promise!

Charly
